KALAMAZOO, Mich.—How to compost with worms and keep a bicycle in working order is just some of the information É«É«À² Michigan University will impart during its 2018 Sustainability Celebration from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.

The annual event showcases efforts by É«É«À² and its Office for Sustainability to guide and assist the campus community in fulfilling and growing its sustainability commitments and creating a culture of sustainability that improves the quality of life for all.

Free celebration parking will be available in Lot 76 behind the Office for Sustainability.

Open house

The celebration will begin with an open house from noon to 3 p.m. at the Office for Sustainability building, 2529 W. Michigan Ave. in Kalamazoo. The festive event will include live music; appetizers featuring locally grown food; a bike giveaway; and, for new É«É«À² students, a free É«É«À²-branded EcoJug water bottle.

Attendees will have a chance to learn about local as well as campus sustainability groups and engagement opportunities. They also may stop in at the office's Open Bike Shop to work on or learn more about their bicycle. The shop, normally open one day each week, is a place where anyone can repair their bikes with the guidance of student mechanics.

Workshops

The Sustainability Celebration will conclude with two free workshops that are open to all students and the public, although seating is limited:

• Bike Basics will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Participants will learn how to fit their bike to their body, how to change a flat tire, and basic brake and gear maintenance. They must bring their own bicycle to the workshop, but tools, bike stands and incidentals will be provided.
• Worm Composting for Beginners will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Participants will learn how to build and maintain a worm bin for in-home composting as a means to reduce waste and create soil. All construction materials and tools will be provided, and participants will leave with their own worm bin.
