ABOUT THE FIRST DAY SHOE FUND

Since incorporating in 2006, First Day Shoe Fund has provided new athletic shoes to students qualifying for free- or reduced-price lunch and has grown to serve elementary students from Kalamazoo Public Schools, Comstock Public Schools, Paramount Charter Academy, WoodsEdge Learning Center, Vicksburg and Portage's Haverhill Elementary. In 2017, First Day Shoe Fund and its supporters supplied 4,687 pairs of shoes to children in Kalamazoo County.

At the start of each school year, families are given a chance to sign up for their child to receive new shoes; and volunteers and school staff work to find the right fit for each student's feet. New shoes that fit properly are critical to a child's self-esteem and ability to participate in gym class, recess and after-school sports activities.

First Day Shoe Fund accepts donations of shoes and uses monetary donations to purchase shoes in all sizes each year. Learn how to contribute and volunteer
