É«É«À² garners more than $1 million in grants in January, February

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—ɫɫÀ² Michigan University garnered more than $1 million in externally funded awards in January and February, pumping the year-to-date total to nearly $17.5 million since the July 1 start of the current fiscal year, É«É«À² trustees learned at their March 23 meeting.

Grants for research

Grants for research led the way, coming in at $440,372, while grants for instruction hit $273,600. Public service awards totaled $191,969, and grants for student services climbed to $150,000. An additional $40,000 was awarded from the É«É«À² Research Foundation.

Research awards were topped by a continuing grant of $122,918 from the Michigan Department of Education to Dr. Mark Jenness, former director and senior researcher for SAMPI—Science and Mathematics Program Improvement. The grant will be used to provide technical assistance and conduct a cross-site evaluation of teacher development projects through the Michigan Improving Teacher Quality Professional Development Competitive Grants Program.

Grants for instruction were led by a $252,400 award from Bronson Orthopedic and Sports Medicine to Dr. Michael Miller, professor of human performance and health education, to support É«É«À² graduate student athletic trainers working at various local area high schools.
