É«É«À² closed Tuesday, Jan. 7, due to severe weather

KALAMAZOO—Except for essential and emergency services, É«É«À² Michigan University will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 7, due to severe weather. All classes are canceled.

The closure includes the University's Kalamazoo and Battle Creek campuses. For information on the status of regional locations, visit the Extended University Programs Web page.

This article will be updated with event cancellations and special hours as information becomes available.

Events

Canceled

  • The One Stop Convenience Center, scheduled to be open Jan. 7, will instead be closed. The center will remain open through 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, one day later than originally planned. See a full list of One Stop hours here.
  • The meeting scheduled to solicit community input on the East Hall renovation plans, originally set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7, has been canceled, and will be rescheduled.
  • The student program "So You Want To Be a Residence Life Staff Member," originally set for 7 p.m. Jan. 7, has been canceled and rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, in the Harrison/Stinson Hall lobby.

Not canceled

  • The Bronco women's basketball versus Buffalo will be held as planned Jan. 7. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. in University Arena.

Campus services

  • Drop/add period for spring semester—Due to the two-day campus closure, the University is extending the period during which students may drop or add spring 2014 semester classes. The period has been extended through Tuesday, Jan. 14.
  • Due date for spring semester tuition payments—Tuition and fees for the spring 2014 semester will now be due Wednesday, Jan. 8.
  • Bernhard Center—building is open regular hours, 8 a.m. to midnight, Jan. 7. All offices are closed. Biggby Coffee is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Dining services—A±ô±ô residence hall dining rooms and late-night carryouts are open when the University closes due to weather. Regular hours and menus are followed. Campus Cafes such as Flossie's, the Plaza Cafe and the Bernhard Cafe are closed. The B3 Coffee Lounge in Bistro3 is also closed.
  • Sindecuse Health Center is open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 7.
  • Student Recreation Center is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 7. There will be extended family hours for members. Updates will be posted at wmich.edu/rec.
  • Students are still able to place orders for textbooks and other course materials with the É«É«À² Bookstore .

Weather-related University closings since 1999

  • 1999, Jan. 4-5—Heavy snowfall delayed the start of spring semester.
  • 2000, Nov. 21-22—Thanksgiving recess began Tuesday because of snow.
  • 2006, Dec. 1—An ice storm downed trees and caused power outages.
  • 2007, Feb. 5—Extreme cold and snow closed many Michigan colleges.
  • 2008, Feb. 1—ɫɫÀ² closed due to snow.
  • 2009, Dec. 10—Blizzard conditions closed É«É«À².
  • 2013, Jan. 31—Snow and icy conditions closed É«É«À².
  • 2014, Jan. 6-7—Significant snowfall and expected severely cold temperatures prompted many Michigan colleges to close. The closure delayed the start of spring semester.
