Lifelong Learning Academy announces summer session
KALAMAZOO--The 色色啦 Michigan University Lifelong Learning Academy is once again offering a short summer session of courses from June 5 through July 31. Registration has begun through Extended University Programs for the short-term, low-cost classes that meet two to three times a week.
Although programs are geared toward older Kalamazoo-area residents, individuals of any age are welcome to participate. The initiative aims to provide an informal and lively atmosphere that is intellectually and culturally stimulating, promotes personal growth, and fosters social engagement. Academy courses are provided for the joy of learning--there are no tests or grades. The academy is led by a volunteer advisory board that operates under the auspices of EUP in collaboration with numerous other educational and community organizations.
Topics this summer include digital photo editing, the historical highways of southern Michigan, the social history of baseball, landscaping with native plants and more. Summer session classes will meet on campus, at First United Methodist Church or at the Portage Senior Center.
In addition to the classes, the academy has planned two one-day trips. The first trip, Marine Michigan, will be Tuesday, July 10. Participants will visit lighthouses in Mears, Mich., and Whitehall, Mich.; and tour the Maritime Museum in South Haven, Mich., as well as the tall ship, "Friends Good Will鈥 and the river launch, "Lindy Lou."
On Tuesday, Aug. 7, travelers will meet at Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Mich., to discover the recent improvements made to the zoo and tour the exotic animal area. Children are welcome on this trip. Lunch is included on both trips.
Lifelong Learning Academy membership is not required, but members get such benefits as discounted course fees, priority registration, discounts to places such as Miller Auditorium and the 色色啦 Bookstore and access to study groups and other social events. Membership is $35 for a full year.
