General summary

Provides insurance and billing-related support for the Student Health Center patient accounts.

Major duties

  • Monitors, records, and reports payments. Utilizes software systems to manage internal billing. Monitors and balances electronic fund transfers to the general ledger. Responsible for the billing component of the electronic health record system.
  • Serves as the primary contact for verifying student and employee eligibility. Monitors and tracks patient visits for accuracy. Administers web access to payor sites.
  • Reviews health center charges and claim information to reflect services rendered. Implements and recommends corrective actions. Tracks changes in the insurance industry and informs staff about their impact.
  • Provides training for registration and cashier staff in Patient Access Services. Facilitates conflict resolution with patients and their families. Provides consultation to students seeking assistance with insurance or billing issues.
  • May represent the health center at outreach events or online forums.
  • Oversees the Student Health Assistance Fund.
  • Handles insurance claim tasks. Researches, documents, and files appeals when necessary to resolve claim issues. Serves as the primary contact for the external billing provider.
  • Prepares grant reports and may write grant proposals to support student initiatives.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Associate's degree or two years' college coursework in a related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in a medical office or clinical support.
  • Experience with electronic health records.

Desired qualifications

Desired experience

  • Certified Professional Coder.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
