Chair receives national award for advocacy of multicultural issues

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Dr. Valerie Dixon, chair of the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology, was awarded the Sylvia Walker Education Award by the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC) for 2024. The award, announced on July 26, recognizes individuals addressing multicultural issues and being advocates for the association's focus on diversity and multiculturalism as a part of society.

"Dr. Dixon’s recognition by the NAMRC highlights her exceptional dedication to fostering inclusive and equitable practices in counseling education," says Dr. Laura Dinehart, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. "She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs of diverse populations."

According to Dinehart, Dixon's expertise and research in the field adds more value to É«É«À²'s Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology. 

"Her focus on multicultural competence not only enhances the department's already stellar reputation in this area, but also helps create an supportive learning environment and engaging atmosphere where all students can succeed," adds Dinehart.
