Bronco Spotlight: Jessy Gigowsky
Therapist at The Family Therapy Place
I am a limited licensed professional counselor in the state of Michigan with a specialization in working with adolescents, young adults, and families. I work with individuals seeking change or help in areas such as anxiety, depression, trauma, mood dysregulation, crisis stabilization, communication, and improving their relationship with themselves.
If you had a campus job or internship, how did they impact your career development?
I had an internship at Forestview Hospital to complete my 600 hour internship for my degree. After I graduated I was offered a full-time adolescent therapist/case manager position and worked there until I recently transitioned to private practice.
If you had a campus job or internship, how did they impact your career development?
Personally Dr. Burns was extremely helpful throughout grad school. She was very well versed in helping students navigate the program and prepare for the field once you graduate. I also think the on-campus practicum was very helpful getting exposure to clients and gaining experience as a new therapist before going into internship.
Which of your skills had the biggest impact on your success?
I believe my passion for helping individuals grow and heal has been my biggest strength and had the biggest impact on my career.
What experiences impacted the choice of your career path?
The experience that had the biggest impact on my career path would be my experiences in my undergrad psychology courses that helped me realize what career path I wanted to take. In addition, the opportunity as a TA for an abnormal psychology class helped me find my passion for adolescents and mental health.
What advice do you have for others pursuing a career similar to yours?
I always like to remind individuals that are considering pursuing a career as a counselor/therapist to make sure your program is at a CACREP accredited university. Also it is important to research the different counseling licenses within your state to see which one aligns best with what you want to pursue.
