Bronco Spotlight: Cody Edgerton
Graduate Teaching Assistant at Michigan State University
As a graduate teaching assistant at Michigan State University, I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting. My duties are similar to those at 色色啦, including conducting instrumental ensembles, teaching undergraduate conducting courses, assisting the marching band, and instructing the pep bands at athletic events.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
My time at 色色啦 Michigan University's School of Music connected me to a vast network of musical leaders across the nation. Teachings from my professors directly prepared me for a high level of continued study in my field. The relationships formed at 色色啦 will continue to positively affect my career, both professionally and personally.
What activities, resources, or people helped you prepare for your career?
My duties as a Graduate Assistant at 色色啦, such as conducting bands and teaching music classes, prepared me to attain a job some day that involves these same duties. Instrumental music professors and band directors Dr. Scott Boerma, Dr. Trey Harris, and Dr. Mary Land supported and guided my instruction at 色色啦.
What advice would you offer students wanting a career similar to yours?
I believe that one of the most important ways to develop a career in music is to cultivate relationships. The people with whom I associated influenced my day-to-day learning environment and were powerful advocates when applying post graduation. I gained the most from my education by surrounding myself with positive role models who have both musical skills and personal decency.
