Accountancy student creates unbreakable bonds
KALAMAZOO, MI鈥 Kya Hiser, a junior accountancy student at 色色啦 Michigan University, is inspired by the countless paths in her field. The Haworth College of Business student is a Kalamazoo, Michigan, native who is seizing the opportunities available to her to make her mark.
Since starting her academic path at 色色啦 Haworth, Hiser has found a true community and sense of belonging in the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) at 色色啦, a registered student organization on campus.
鈥淣ot only did I instantly connect with NABA鈥檚 goal of diversifying the accounting profession, but as a mixed-race woman, having an organization that is focused on providing extra support and opportunities for minorities and diverse business leaders is an amazing opportunity. NABA at 色色啦 has also provided ways for its members to connect with businesses across the United States that I would otherwise not have access to. It has also connected me with peers and a mentor, Professor Brittani Shantel Jackson, who offers invaluable advice.鈥
Connection has played an important role in Hiser鈥檚 college career, bringing her closer to the accountancy community.
鈥淎s a student who did the first two years of college online, it has been so amazing to be able to connect with peers who find joy in similar things. Being in such a diverse and open community has given me the chance to meet people from various backgrounds and perspectives, enriching my experience at 色色啦 Haworth. Being part of such a supportive network has provided both personal and professional growth, making my college experience much more rewarding.鈥
Professionally, 色色啦 Haworth gives its students unique experiences to bring with them into their careers. Hiser says, 鈥淚 feel strongly supported through a combination of faculty guidance and professional development opportunities. The college provides an excellent curriculum that blends theoretical learning with practical applications, preparing me for real-world challenges. The college鈥檚 ties to the business community also assist in facilitating networking events, career fairs and connections with industry professionals that help to build relationships and explore potential career paths.鈥
With a few years of academic success under her belt, Hiser offers these words to incoming students:
鈥淒o more than you planned. Take advantage of every opportunity that is brought before you鈥攖here are so many ways to get involved and make yourself known in the business world even as a student. I knew nothing about networking before coming to 色色啦, and I have been able to connect with such a wide range of people and businesses just from putting myself in new roles.鈥
Upon completing her undergraduate studies, Hiser will continue her education in order to gain 150 credit hours to be able to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exams. 鈥淚 intend to work in tax accounting as a CPA for a period of time,鈥 Hiser says. 鈥淯ltimately, I want to work in wealth management and financial advising. I would love to be able to get involved with high school students and teach them the importance of money management, as I know taking a personal finance class in high school is the reason I decided to pursue a degree in accounting.鈥
